You can't keep a levee up by prayer alone
The Republican strategy, as practiced by the current administration, has been to take care of the privileged and business classes and maintain infrastructure as pertains to them; then the faith based institutions are encouraged to care for the disadvantaged, thus saving the government serious money.
In this case we are seeing that simply does not work. You can't keep a levee up by prayer alone.
In New Orleans we saw armed police protecting the high income neighbourhoods from looters successfully right from the beginning.
In Biloxi, according to this Op-Ed by Paul Krugman in the New York Times:
"On Wednesday," said an editorial in The Sun Herald in Biloxi, Miss., "reporters listening to horrific stories of death and survival at the Biloxi Junior High School shelter looked north across Irish Hill Road and saw Air Force personnel playing basketball and performing calisthenics. Playing basketball and performing calisthenics!"
This is the second time we have seen Bush and the administration playing fiddle while Rome burned (remember the children's class on 9/11?). And that's not even counting Iraq.
Is there any chance it's the last?
PS Did you notice the fortuitous timing of the arrival of the army relief trucks in New Orleans, abundantly photographed and shown on the news, shortly before the President shows up?
